Pro Farmer went through Iowa and Illinois on Wednesday and reported at the end of the day its forecast for Illinois is 171.64 bushels per acre which is on par with the August USDA forecast of 172BPA. This would be a 14 percent drop in yield from the previous year. Both Pro Farmer and the USDA are below the latest Planalytics forecast of 176.2 BPA. The soybean pod count was 1,190.47 in a 3x3 foot area which was down 12 percent from the previous year.
Grains were modestly higher in night trade with corn and beans posting slightly better than a 1-cent advance, while wheat in Chicago and Kansas City was unchanged.

The number of Soybean pods was about on par with last year’s levels. In the Eastern leg of the tour yields were not nearly as positive. Pro Farmer estimated Ohio corn yield at 148.37 bushels per acre which was down significantly from the 182.11 bushels last year. The Pro Farmer Ohio yield estimate is also considerably lower than the latest production forecast from the USDA in the August report which pegged Ohio yield at 168 bushels per acre.

Grains traded sharply lower on the August Supply and Demand report which was released out yesterday. A surprise yield increase for both corn and soybeans shocked the market resulting in significantly larger ending stocks than originally expected out of this report. Corn yield was adjusted 2 bushels per acre higher to 168.8 BPA bringing new crop corn ending stocks to 1.713 billion bushels which was 289 million bushels over expectations. Soybean yield was revised .9 bushels higher to 46.9 BPA in this report pushing ending stocks 169 million bushels above analyst expectations to 470 million bushels.

The policy to cut the reference rate was intended to help combat the economic slowdown that has dominated Chinese markets over the last few months. The move to cut rates and devalue the Yuan triggered selling in commodities last night as traders worried that a continued decline in the currency would hurt the buying power of Chinese consumers.

Last week both Informa and FC Stone released their yield estimates for corn and soybeans below the existing July USDA forecast. Informa set its corn yield forecast at 165.4 BPA and its soybean yield forecast at 45.4 BPA. FC Stone set its corn yield estimates at 165 BPA and its soybean 45 BPA. The July USDA forecast set corn yield at 166.8 BPA and soybean yield at 46 BPA.
Grain futures were mostly stable this week as traders’ awaited fresh news on the crop supply situation from USDA’s August 12th report. In the cash market, average basis levels across the country were mostly unchanged for soybeans but up 2 cents a bushel on the week for corn.

Egypt announced a tender for 55-60,000 metric tons of wheat from either the US, Ukraine, Russia or Australia. The U.S. is not expected to win the tender due a stronger U.S dollar and higher prices here in the U.S. Korea also issued a tender for purchase of up to 207,000 metric tons of yellow corn to be sourced from optional origins this morning.

Corn and soybeans seemed to find some buying support during yesterday’s session with both grains closing the day in the top half of the day’s trading range. Soybeans had the most dramatic price bar of the day, printing a doji near support indicating a possible change in trend.

The weather forecast continues to look positive for corn and soybeans across the Midwest with cooler than normal conditions expected this week. Rains should be widespread this week covering the eastern grain belt this evening and moving west later this week.
Cash grain basis was mixed this week with corn basis up 2 cents a bushel, while soybean basis was off 2 cents a bushel.
In corn, basis levels were mostly firmer in Iowa and Nebraska as ethanol plants have bid higher in an interest to get more farmer grain after the recent sell off. In addition, buyers in Indiana and Ohio posted higher basis as futures prices declined and poor new-crop prospects limited farmer movement of old crop supplies.
