Will Wheat Bounce?

在一夜之间session corn is trading down 1 3/4 cents, soybeans are up 3 cents and wheat is down 8 cents going into this morning’s pause. The U.S. dollar is higher again this morning by .35 percent on continued worries out of Greece and the Euro zone. Crude oil is trading down 9 cents.

Crop progress was released after the close of trade yesterday and showed that 92 percent of corn was planted as of May 24th which is ahead of the four year average of 88 percent. Soybeans are also ahead of pace with 61 percent of soybeans planted compared to the four year average of 55 percent.

US dollar up sharply

在一夜之间session the grains are trading lower with corn down 2 1/4 cents, soybeans down 1 cent and wheat down 4 3/4 cents. The U.S Dollar is trading up over a percent this morning and crude oil has slipped 68 cents. Japan is seeking to buy 100,262 metric tons of food quality wheat from the U.S or Canada in a regular tender closing tomorrow.

Heavy rains which ranged from 1-4 inches fell across Texas, Oklahoma and parts of Kansas causing localized flooding and adding to the concern of winter wheat crop quality. This is the 5th week in a row that significant rains have fallen throughout the southern plains.

Weekly Cash Comments

Basis levels for corn were off 1 cent for the week adding to the previous week’s losses, while soybean basis managed a 2-cent advance thanks to a sharply lower week on the futures market.

For corn, there was modest weakness along the river markets this week with a 3-cent loss at the Gulf providing the biggest catalyst of change to upstream facilities. Corn buyers along the East Coast and Plains saw relatively more strength this week, but ethanol plants as a group were off 2-cents a bushel. Areas of Iowa and Minnesota were especially prone to losses this week with 5-cent a bushel losses being fairly typical at some key end users.

Can export sales lift corn?

在一夜之间session the grains are trading higher, with corn up 1 1/2 cents, soybeans up 1 1/4 cents and wheat up 3 cents. The U.S. dollar is lower by 1/10th of a percent and crude oil is 48 cents higher. This morning a reportable export sale was announced for 152,400 metric tons of old crop corn to unknown destinations and 50,800 metric tons of new crop. Chicago wheat trades near its 100 day moving average (5.18 3/4) which has acted as strong resistance on Monday and Tuesday this week. Wheat traders are focusing on the heavy rains in the southern plains which have been causing concerns that the wheat will have quality issues at harvest. Wheat traders are also monitoring Russia whose forecast has turned dry over the next two weeks and whose crop is beginning to feel stress from the hot dry weather.

Weekly Cash Comments

Corn basis was mostly unchanged for the week with US average basis levels stagnate. However, a late week increase in futures prices but cash corn basis levels on the defensive. For soybeans, basis levels posted a modest 1-cent a bushel advance as nearby futures prices gave up 18 cents on the week.

In corn, Thursday’s 6-cent advance was met with relatively sharp drops in basis by corn merchants. Even Friday morning there was clear follow through with major plants in MN & NE posting lower basis compared to Thursday’s quotes.

NOPA numbers to be released mid-morning

在一夜之间session the corn traded a 1/4 cent higher, soybeans traded 2 cents higher and wheat in Chicago fell 2 1/4 cents. Wheat traded sharply higher in yesterday’s session fueled by rapid short covering and is now close to its 100 day moving average at 521 3/4 which will most likely offer up some resistance.

This morning Russia announced that they will remove the wheat export duty until a new formula can be introduced on July 1st. By removing the export duty, it is estimated that the country’s exports will increase by 1 million metric tons this marketing year.

Can Export Sales Lift the Markets?

在一夜之间session the grains moved higher with corn up 2 3/4 cents, soybeans up 1/4 cent and wheat up 8 1/4 cents. The dollar index continues to move lower this morning following yesterday’s April retail numbers. Crude oil is down 30 cents this morning trading around the $60 mark.

Export sales were relatively unimpressive this morning with old crop corn exports the biggest disappointment. Old crop corn sales were reported at 370,000 metric tons, down 56 percent from last week and missing expectations which ranged from 600,000-800,000 metric tons. Old crop wheat sales reported 115,000 metric tons which was on the high side of expectations which ranged from cancellations to sales of 100,000 metric tons.

Grains Bounce on Weak Dollar

Planting Progress Leaps Forward

Crop progress showed strong planting progress for the grains this week and improved wheat conditions after the market closed yesterday. Corn planting jumped 20% last week with 75% of the crop now planted, well ahead of the four year average of 57% complete during the same time period.

Grain futures continued to dip lower this week with planting in full swing and promising prospects for another year of bumper crops. In the cash market, corn basis posted some modest strength this week, while soybean basis continued to be flat, showing no significant change on average across the country.

Oil is trading 68 cents higher and the U.S. dollar is down 1/10th of a percent. South Korea purchased 63,000 metric tons of corn late yesterday.

This week in Kansas City, crop scouts met Thursday afternoon to release the final wheat yield and production forecast after three days on the tour. The wheat council’s Kansas crop forecast was 35.9 bushels per acre which is well below the 5 year average of 40.3 bushels per acre. They also pegged production at 288.5 million bushels per acre which was down from the 5 year average of 331.6 million bushels. The wheat forecast reflected an early season drought, winterkill events and observed disease throughout the three day tour.

Soybeans Exports Continue to Impress
