Grain futures continued their recovery in the night session as heavy rains and declining crop conditions have the markets moving higher. Corn was up 3 cents a bushel while wheat and corn are up 6 cents a bushel.
In wheat, heavy rains from Tropical Storm Bill will push through Eastern OK/TX over the next few days. While this is not in the path of the major HRW wheat belt, the rains should eventually find their way to SRW wheat territory of IL/IN/MO.
Monday brought a new week of intense selling pressure in the grains and Tuesday’s overnight trade found only a modest recovery from the lows established the day before. In night trade, wheat was up 4, corn was up 2, and nearby soybeans posted a 5 cent advance.

Analysis confirmed that the proposed mandates do indeed imply pressure towards higher ethanol blends or non-ethanol biofuel.

The crop progress report was released out yesterday afternoon showing that corn planting was complete and 91 percent of the crop has emerged. Crop conditions improved slightly with the excellent category rising to 13 percent from 12 percent last week. Corn rated good-to-excellent was unchanged on the week at 74 percent which met expectations.

In corn, there was little incentive for corn buyers to be aggressive on basis as a reversal in futures prices helped push more supplies into the pipeline. At the Gulf, export basis was off 3 cents a bushel and river terminals followed suit also posting a 3-cent decline for the week.

This week’s export sales did little to impress with old crop corn and soybeans below expectations and wheat recording cancellations of 20,400 metric tons. New crop sales were mixed with corn showing export cancellations of 54,800 metric tons, soybeans beating analyst expectations by booking 347,000 metric tons and wheat recording sales of 364,000 metric tons which was within analyst expectations.
In the overnight session the grains are trading slightly lower with corn down 3/4 of a cent, soybeans down 4 1/4 cents and wheat down 1 1/4 cents going into this morning’s pause in trade. Crude oil is down $1.04 this morning and the U.S. dollar has rallied back nearly 1/2 a percent from the sell-off yesterday. ADP numbers, which are generally used as a leading indicator for non-farm payrolls, were released this morning showing payrolls grew to 200,000 jobs in May, up from 169,000 jobs reported in April. ADP payrolls were better than expected and provided strength to the U.S. dollar this morning.

Yesterday, crop progress showed that all planting for corn is nearly complete with 95 percent done as of May 31st. This is on par with the average of 94 percent complete during this time of the year and up from 92 percent complete last week. The condition of the corn crop remained unchanged from last week.

On Friday, the grain crushers strike in Rosario Argentina was resolved which should have a positive effect on exports out of Argentina.
Sunday provided precipitation that ranged from 1/4 of an inch to an inch of precipitation throughout eastern North Dakota, South Dakota and eastern Nebraska. In the southern Plains most of the precipitation fell in eastern Colorado with spotty showers spread throughout the western parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas.

It was another week lower in the grain futures markets as the prospects of another bumper crop this fall keep prices on the defensive. In the cash market, basis levels only showed modest improvement for soybeans, which gained 1-cent a bushel while corn basis was unchanged for the week.
For corn, basis levels were mostly flat with ethanol plants showing no real movement as a group. However, in Iowa there was some noticeable weakness in spot basis with numerous plants in the region posting 2 to 5 cent losses on the week.

Yesterday, the weekly ethanol production numbers showed an increase in production by 11,000 barrels per day to 969,000 barrels per day. Stocks declined this week by 337,000 barrels to 20.1 million barrels. Ethanol production has picked up sharply in the late part of May which is typical going into the driving season. Ethanol production is up 4.8 percent over last year compared to the USDA’s corn used for ethanol balance sheet item which suggests only a 1.3 percent increase.
