In corn, ethanol plants continue to show less basis strength then other areas as the outlook for ethanol is clouded by falling energy prices.
In the overnight session the grains are trading higher with corn up 1 ½ cents, soybeans up 7 ¼ cents and wheat up 4 ½ cents going into the morning pause in trade. This morning it was announced that 110,000 metric tons of new crop soybeans was sold to China. The market will be closed on Monday and reopen at 7 PM CST on the 16th.

Corn export sales beat analyst expectations by increasing 19 percent week over week and booking 1,003,100 metric tons. This week’s sales were well above the 600,000-800,000 metric tons expected by the market. Soybeans also had a fantastic week booking 745,400 metric tons which is up 52 percent from last week and nearly double the 250,000-450,000 metric tons expected by the market.
In the overnight session the grains continued lower with corn down 2 ½ cents, soybeans down 2 cents and wheat down 5 cents going into this morning’s pause in trading. Crude oil is also trading lower and the U.S. dollar is up a fraction of a percent.
Yesterday’s WASDE report provided a small surprises for the market with both corn and soybean ending stocks revised lower, but funds responded to the news by selling 7,000 contracts of corn, 7,000 contracts of soybeans and 6,000 contracts of wheat.

Grain basis was mostly stronger on the week even with futures prices trying to rebound off of recent lows. For the week ending February 5, spot corn basis was up 1 cent a bushel while spot bean bids advanced 2 cents on the week.

In the overnight session corn is up 1 ¾ cents, soybeans is up 5 ¼ cents and wheat is trading 5 cents higher.
Export sales were mixed this morning with soybeans booking 489,700 metric tons this week which was on the high side of analyst expectations. Soybean sales fell 35 percent week over week, but have booked 94 percent of total export sales forecast by the USDA in the January 12th crop report.

The futures market slide 12 ¼ cents for soybeans and 8 ½ cents for corn but despite the sharp slide in prices, basis remained for the most part steady increasing only a penny for soybeans and 1 ½ cents for corn.
In the overnight session corn is trading ¾ of a penny lower with soybeans unchanged and a 2 cent increase in wheat. Wheat prices found support yesterday after touching $5.00 ¾ briefly during the session. Wheat seems oversold at these levels after falling sharply from the $6.77 high on December 28th.
In the overnight session corn is trading down 2 ¼ cents, soybeans are trading 3 ¾ cents higher and wheat is down 2 ¼ cents. This morning a reportable sale of 116,000 metric tons of sorghum was announced to unknown destinations with 58,000 metric tons for delivery in 14/15 marketing year and the other 58,000 delivered for new crop.
