Mycotoxin & Crop Report: Hot Weather Stresses Crops

Southwestern showers bring relief while spring wheat conditions are well above average

The USDA's June 22 bulletin reports that hot, dry weather in the Central and Southern plains led to increased stress on summer crops.

The Northwest experienced cooler-than-normal temperatures while the rest of the country experienced mostly normal to above normal temperatures.

Southwestern showers bring relief

Scattered showers fell across the northern and eastern U.S.

Monsoon showers in the four corners states also brought drought relief.

Spring wheat conditions well above average

The wheat harvest continues as crop maturity advances.

  • Winter wheat acres are 91% headed, four points behind the five-year average; 30% are in good-to-excellent condition, 19 points behind last year
  • 89% of spring wheat acres are emerged, eight points behind the five-year average
  • 59% are in good to excellent condition, 32 points ahead of last year

Barley conditions

  • Barley acres are 8% headed, five points behind the five-year average
  • 51% are in good-to-excellent condition, 12 points ahead of last year
  • Old acres are 42% headed, 12 points behind the five-year average
  • 60% are in good to excellent condition, 21 points ahead of last year

Corn development

Corn development is highly variable within some fields.

  • 95% of corn acres are emerged, the same as the five-year average
  • 70% are in good-to-excellent condition, five points ahead of last year
