Weather and harvest updates
The USDA’s October 18 bulletin reports more dry weather in large production parts of the country enabling late fall field work as well as aiding in the harvesting of late season crops.
Record heat waves added to dry conditions in the Northwest as well as southern and eastern Texas. Although the majority of winter wheat has been planted, dry conditions are prohibiting germination throughout growing regions.
The Northeast and Southeast did however see scattered showers while parts of the Midwest saw their first snows and freezes in some areas as far south as Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

- Winter wheat is 69% planted, 1 point above five-year average
- Corn maturity advances and the fall harvest continues
- 94% of corn is mature, 2 points above the five-year average
- 45% of corn is harvested, 5 points above the five-year average
- Nationally, 53% of corn is in good to excellent condition, 7 points behind last year
