Weather and harvest updates
The USDA’s December 13 bulletin reports continued dry conditions in large swaths of the central U.S. accompanied by several notable storm systems in the Southeast and West Coast.
Snowfall on the west coast continues to add to high elevation snowpack from the Sierras to the Northwest. Meanwhile, rain fell across the Southeast and northern Atlantic seaboard.
Large portions of the nation’s midsection are still without needed precipitation, worsening drought conditions and making ill-established winter wheat crops vulnerable to winter storms.
Temperatures ranged from a few degrees below average in the northwest and northern plains, to a few degrees above across much of the south, Midwest, and east coast, with a notable exception of the Gulf states which saw averages nearly 15 degrees above average.
